Book Reviews

I really have to say, today is one of the best days I have experienced in a long time. The reason, I'm sure most of anyone who bothers to read this will understand, unless they have been spoiled in some way by a higher access or something, is this. I just received a package via US Postal Services that I have been anxiously waiting in anticipation for 2 weeks. Sorry for the look of disappointment, Ms. Cable-Person, when you came to sell me your latest deal yesterday, but I was expecting something far more important to my winter hibernation period. Books.

That's right. I just received a package of 9 new and used paperback science-fiction books from Clarkesworld Books which I had ordered online not more than 2 weeks ago. I really have to admit, I am nearly delerious with relief. I had been worried, as it was the very first time I ever ordered books via the internet and I feared the package might get lost  or something. I also worried that it might be delivered at a later date when I was scheduled to be away from my office for a medical appointment and if left outside my door (my box is too small for large packages) it might be stolen by some desperate punk looking for easy money for the taking.

Well, this is the kind of thing that makes me feel good about the harvest season and all the holiday spirit familiar with this time of the year, despite all my multiple physcial, social, financial, and psycholgical problems. To hell with all that for now!  I have 9 wonderful paperback reasons to forget the hard reality today and hopefully, they will be quite effective towards helping me to keep those problems at bay for the most of the winter season.

So, here's the goodies I got in my holiday package: Robert Silverberg's Roma Eterna, Roger Zelazny's The Last Defender of Camelot and Roadmarks, Jack Vance's The Palace of Love (Third of the Demon Prince novels), Clifford D. Simak's Strangers in the Universe, Gordon R. Dickson's Sleepwalker's World, Keith Laumer's The Great Time Machine Hoax, and Andre Norton's The Sioux Spaceman and The Zero Stone.

Hmm... Silverberg's The Second Trip was also on the list, I just rechecked, but it wasn't in the package. I wonder why. Oh, well, it was used and only $1.75, so I'm not gonna lose any rest over it. I'm quite sure that these 9 books will be enough.

As a long-time lover of good science fiction books, I feel really good (for a change) about this package. Who the hell needs cable tv when they have plenty of good sci-fi books to keep them interested? And to think, i got all 9 books (mostly used, but still in very good shape) for just $30. That kind of money won't even get me a month of cable tv these days. Screw cable tv! My internet access, modest DVD collection, and sci-fi books will get me through the winter. I don't need no stinking cable!
