Day
of the Mystikon
3. The NYC and the EMDA After a drunken, hedonistic dance about the hot-spots of Times Square, I awoke in a classy hotel room with a pretty brunette in the bed beside me, and tried to recall the night before. Much of it was somewhat obscure, like a dream, but I knew what happened and had no regrets. It was the wildest night I ever had in my life. As I arose, my head let me know I had a hell of a hangover, and suggested I take it slow. I checked the time, it was almost 9 am, and called room service to deliver a pot of coffee. Marie, the pretty brunette, awoke as the coffee was being delivered and got up to join me with a big smile. She didn’t bother dressing, just strolled across the room completely naked, and gave me a big hug and a kiss. Now I recalled why I liked her so much. I’d always had a thing for liberated females, and relished the fact that I’d finally found one I could spend some time with alone. “I love you, Ren,” she said, accepting a cup of coffee. “Do you want me to stay, or are you going to kick me out on that terrible street?" I sat down and sipped the coffee, nursing the hangover, and looked at her thoughtfully. “I wouldn’t dream of kicking you out on the street, Maria,” I said. “I like being with you.” Even as I said this, however, I knew there were many things I had to take care of, eventually. I decided it could wait another day or two. After all, this was supposed to be a vacation. She sat on the bed and ate a doughnut while I slowly regained my senses. I noted the camera on the table by the chair and recalled the photo-shoot. I opened the drawer and found about 20 pictures, all of Maria and her girlfriend, Margie. “Where’s Margie?” I said, recalling the other girl with us before I passed out. “Oh, she had an early appointment,” Maria said. “We can see her later, if you like.” I suddenly remembered my wallet, which I vaguely recalled hiding in my shoe, and dropped down beside the bed to get it. The wallet had a 50 and a 20 in it. 70 bucks? Had I blown over 1400 in one night? Then I checked my sock and found a roll of hundreds. I sighed with relief and counted the hundreds. There were only 8 left. Dear god, I thought, I actually blew over 600 bucks in one night! Whew! As I recalled it, however, I knew it was worth the money. But from this day forward, I decided I’d better be more careful. Maria asked to see the pictures, so I tossed them to her and she looked them over curiously as she continued to lounge on the bed. We spent the most of the day together in the room, like newlyweds, playing, while room service delivered food end drink. By 6 pm in the evening I was tired of sexual foreplay and tried to write some. I was inspired by my experience with the Martians and the visit to the alternate Earth, and so I thought I had enough material to write a science fiction novel. Maria admitted she was bored and wanted to do something. I gave her 300 bucks, to add to the 200 I’d given her the night before, and told her to go if she wanted to. She accepted the money and said, “Do you want me to come back later?” “Sure, if you want,” I said, “but I’ll be checking out in the morning.” “Maybe I’ll see you later,” she said, “Goodbye, Ren. It’s been fun.” “Goodbye, Maria,” I said. “Take care of yourself.” The next morning, around 10 am, I checked out, with less than 400 bucks in my wallet. Maria did not return, and I wasn’t surprised. She wasn’t the kind of girl who got stuck on anyone for long, especially a guy like me. I still had the pictures and the memories. Perhaps we’d meet again, but I doubted it, at least not in the near future. Because as I drove out of the parking lot, I looked at the city and knew I had to get away from it. Not simply because I was already a bit tired of it, but because I didn’t want it to take all my money from me. I had other plans for the money, and it could be done elsewhere in suburbia and the open country. I checked into a motel around New Haven and spent the day shopping about for some ‘material’ for a project that I’d begun on the AB1 Earth. My AB1 Earth ally, NZXK, was by far superior to me in the high-tek field, but I’d managed to pick up a few things during my stay there. In my mind, I retained the basic schematics for a high-tek suit of armor, referred to as EMDA which was capable of deflecting most forms of low-caliber conventional weaponry, and furthermore, I also retained the basics for the construction of a laser. If I was going back to work for the Martians, I decided, this time I was going more prepared. I worked on and off the days in the motel, on the suit of armor, the skems for the laser, and the book. It was June 8th when I finally completed the suit of armor. It consisted of a vest and a jacket, for extra protection, and I estimated could withstand the impact of a .44 magnum at close range, when fully charged. The laser would take longer to construct, due primarily to the rarity of certain integral materials, not the least of all of which was the ‘gemstone’ necessary for the main function of energy amplification. I decided to take a break, loaded everything into the trunk of the Hyundai, and checked out of the motel. I made a bank withdrawal of 500 to add to the 200 left in my wallet, and reflected upon the open sea in the near distance. It had been a long time since I’d been to the beach, so I headed east on the coastal highway and checked out the seaside resorts. I spent 3 days of fun in the sun at 3 different resorts, and decided I’d had enough. I drove north to Hartford, spent the night there in a hotel high-rise, worked on the book, and wondered where to get the ‘parts’ for the laser. The next day, the 12th, I headed north on route 91, to MIT, the Mass. Institute of Technology. |
